Do you ever fiddle on viola?
ReplyDeleteI have before, and there are some extremely talented violists who fiddle out there! What's become *hot* in the fiddle world right now is 5-string fiddles - they're slightly larger than a violin, but not as big as a viola, and the dimensions are adjusted a bit all over to accommodate a 5th string. Yes. I try to be a viola fiddler, but remain far better at classical orchestral playing. Irish, Klezmer, a little American stuff (which I think has Celtic roots anyway). That is a great article! Thanks for sharing. I *want* a 5-string electric violin, but can't afford a really high quality one. Thinking about the shar plug-n-play. After reading that article, looked on ebay (a place I tell my students not to look! haha) for acoustic 5-string violins. I just know I'll be unhappy with whatever I end up with because I have such a nice viola! :)
ReplyDeleteI get that! When you have a really nice instrument it's hard to play anything else. I've played some really cool extra-stringed electric instruments and those are easier to pull off than acoustic ones and might actually be cheaper. I played a 10-string electric fiddle once... though I have to say the bottom 4 strings sounded almost un-listenable. Maybe it was me. ;) If you end up getting the plug-n-play let me know how you like it.

I enjoyed your performances at the Cache Celtic Festival, and I only wish they had done a better job saying who was doing the bodhran demonstration and I would have come to that as well. I played once at Mark's session in Ogden a few months ago -- it was disastrous but really fun. We are already planning on another adventure for this Saturday, or we would have tried a road trip to your house concert! :) I'll let you know if I order the plug-n-play... or a chinese one from ebay... haha.
